Climbing Rucu Pichincha in Quito is a great opportunity for hikers to acclimatize without venturing far from the city. It is literally a stone's throw from the center of town. At 4,784 m, it is quite high by South African and even European standards. But here, it's just a bump in an extraordinary landscape.
Getting there is quite easy up the Teleférico (cable car from Quito). Here we buy our tickets and take a 15 minute ride to the top. The journey is impressive and the views of this city are incredible.
Once at the top station (Cruz Loma, 4050m), you will find two main routes leading to the summit. The first is an exciting scramble along the ridge through El Paso De la Muerte. This is a fairly straightforward fight, but it has an exposed journey. The second route forks to the right and goes around the "back" of the volcano. This route is less dangerous, but it is necessary to climb the sandy ash slopes for about 45 minutes. On a clear day, you can see three 5000m volcanoes, including the Cotopaxi Volcano.

Galápagos Natural Life

But getting there is not the only exciting thing… what really requires courage is going down the Chimney or vertical tunnel, which implies a 90 degree descent of almost 50 meters downwards. Going to Montañita is quite an adventure in itself, with its intense life both day and night. The place is an enclave outlined by extensive beaches of fine white sand. Its waters beat hard against the coast, giving shape to a coastline that is lined with colorful surfboards every day, waiting for the perfect wave. For something it was chosen already in 1988 to host the first International Surfing Championship in Ecuador. Later, in 2013, it was the turn of the ISA World Masters Championship. This, added to other great milestones and events, has managed to place Montañita among the 11 best destinations in the world for surfing.
Climbing the Cotopaxi volcano is an adventure that should be on every traveler's bucket list. Also, how many times can you say you climbed an active volcano? Even if you are not a professional climber, you will be able to reach the first refuge to enjoy the snow.
This fantastic day we will go to Chimborazo, the highest mountain in Ecuador (6310mts). We can do this adventure in a full day but if you want to learn more about the culture of the Puruhuá region we recommend 2 days. We will cross the towns, Rumipamba, San Pablo, arriving at the entrance of the protected area, located at 4500 meters above sea level. From here we will appreciate unique species that are found only in this environment such as: vicuñas, alpacas, llamas (different types of camels), Andean eagles and "chuquirahua" flower of the Andes. We arrive at the first refuge (4800mts) (14763ft). From here we begin a walk of approximately 1:30 hours to the Whymper refuge (5000mts)) (16404ft), having a good hot chocolate upon arrival. The adrenaline begins in our descent, our specialized cycling guide will prepare the bicycles and the rest of the equipment to begin the highest descent in Ecuador. The first 8 km are gravel and then change to asphalt (24 km), until you reach the town of San Juan.
